April is here and with it the celebration of Earth Day! A wonderful time to not just reflect, but act on the many ways we can help our Earth. For us, Earth Day holds an important place in our lives, not just today but every day. As you’ve surely noticed during your time at Plowshare, many fair trade items not only support the livelihood of crafters, but also make unique use of recycled materials that would otherwise have gone in the trash.
There are many items we have here at Plowshare that respect our Earth and its people. Here are a few of our favorites:
Canimals: Cute & made in Kenya, these Canimals are made from recycled soda cans and telephone wire. Cut into strips and shaped into the cutest of critters, Canimals definitely make a fun gift, especially when a friend’s favorite drink happens to be in the shape of their favorite animal!
Haitian Metal: Crafted from recycled oil drums in Haiti, each design is drawn out by hand using chalk, and then cut out using only a hammer & chisel - quite an art form! Able to hang indoors or outdoors, we often have oil drum hangings in the form of suns, trees, birds, and other beauties.
Tire Purses: A solution to cleaning up all the tires littering the roads in El Salvador, these durable, funky, fun bags & wallets not only rid of tires from the roadsides, but also help protect individuals from Malaria, as it also rids of the standing water inside of the tires that would otherwise breed more mosquitoes.
Organic Cotton T-shirts: Uplifting and earth-friendly, these Soul Flower t-shirts are made of organic cotton and recycled plastic bottles, which make for a surprisingly soft, and super comfy t-shirt that requires less water & energy, and have been screen printed with positivity by hand!
Recycled Paper: Bowls, wall hangings, paper bead jewelry, clutches & more - so many wowing things have come from the fun (and intricate!) art of crafting with recycled paper. Most of our recycled paper designs come from Uganda and Vietnam, and make memorably unique, eco-friendly gifts, especially for the reader or writer in your life.
For Earth Day however, don’t feel the need to run out and buy. Instead, think of us on all the other days when you need to buy, those days where you need a gift or have run out of coffee, or got a crazy chocolate craving; think of us and go the earth-friendly route! Each eco-friendly purchase we make can lead us towards a better world, and expand the celebration of Earth Day to our everyday lives. It’s about more than just today, the party just keeps on going with that the-more-the-merrier mentality; Fair Trade & Earth Day are a constant celebration!
Happy Earth Day, Friends! :)
